What to do after an accident or collision with your car

In the United States, authorities are very clear about what should be done after being involved in a car accident or crash to avoid penalties or other inconveniences.

Despite the laws, signage, and prevention work of authorities and communities, traffic accidents are common and inevitable situations. For this reason, it is important to know what to do after an accident or collision with your car to avoid penalties related to these events and prevent being left unprotected when making a claim with an insurance company.

In general terms, the laws in the country require – among other things – that drivers involved in traffic accidents notify the authorities about the fact. Thus, they will be in charge of carrying out a detailed inspection that allows them to determine who bears the greatest responsibility. Likewise, drivers must notify their insurers, who will be in charge of resolving everything related to the damages caused.

What to do after an accident or crash with your car?

In the United States, it is extremely important to know what to do after a car accident to guarantee your own safety and that of others, as well as to avoid being punished by the authorities. In such a situation, it is recommended to do the following :

  • The first thing to do after a traffic accident is to ensure our safety. In that sense, it will be necessary to evaluate our physical condition, whether we are injured or not. If there is an injury, it is advisable to avoid moving and try to contact the authorities. If there are no apparent injuries, it is advisable to exit the vehicle.
  • Whenever possible, go to the place where the others involved are located (if there are any) and evaluate their conditions. On this tour, it is also advisable to take photographs or videos of the scene.
  • Take the contact information of the others involved. These data will be necessary for the procedures that must be carried out before the authorities and the corresponding insurance companies. The more information you have, the easier the process will be.
  • Call the authorities and report the incident. After this call, it is important to wait for the authorities to arrive and conduct their own inspection. Fleeing the scene of an accident is considered a crime throughout the United States, therefore, it is necessary to remain there until the authorities give permission to leave.
  • Request evaluation from a doctor to determine possible injuries. Some people do not notice symptoms during the first days after the accident, but they may appear as time passes.
  • File a report at the corresponding police department after the traffic accident. To do this, you can request information from the authorities about the steps to take once you arrive at the scene of the accident.
  • It is important to inform the insurance company about the facts so that they can indicate how to make the claim. Experts recommend having on hand the report that was prepared by the police department, among other precautions that will be determined by the situation.

On some occasions, it is also necessary to seek help from a specialized lawyer, especially when there are injuries, which may become evident as the days go by. Lawyers evaluate the case and determine whether or not it is appropriate to sue the other parties involved to obtain greater compensation to cover medical expenses or other damages.
